Unicorn Pixel Art – A new and easy style of coloring A large part of the pixel art comes from retro (classic) video games due to graphics cards with much lower performance than today’s graphics cards, especially from classic arcade games. For example, Space Invaders (1978) and Pac-Man (1980), and 8-bit (very low) systems such as the Nintendo Entertainment System (1983) and the Sega Master System (1985).
The term “pixel art” was first seen in the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center by Adele Goldberg and Robert Flegal in 1982. This original and clever concept dates back more than 11 years, but similar models can be seen in Richard Shoup’s SuperPaint (style) in 1972, also at Xerox PARC.
Some contemporary art forms, such as thread embroidery and certain other types of mosaics and beads, are very similar to pixel art. These art forms build from images very small units of colour similar to the pixels of modern digital computing that we see on our screens. Elsewhere we could see works with similarities, the larger scale concept can be seen in North Korea at the Arirang festival 🎮
